Borrow an item

If your children go to Shade, Windber, or Shanksville schools then you are able to get a free card here. If you live within the Windber borough, Shanksville, Central City, Shade township, Paint township, Paint borough, Ogle township, or Benson borough then you can get a free library card here.

Bring your library card with you. Browse the shelves till you find a book you want. There is no limit on the amount of books you can check out. The different sections for books are Biography, Oversize-Nonfiction, Nonfiction, New Nonfiction and Fiction, Young Adult, Fiction, Paperback Oversize, Paperback, Juvenile Fiction and Nonfiction, Easy Reader, and Large Print Fiction. Take your books to the Check-Out counter, if you have no over dues or fines then they will be checked out to you for two weeks. You have two renewals available to you.

Computer

To get on the public computers you must have your library card, have no overdue’s or fines. If you are a guest you can bring a photo I.D. and be able to use a computer. Users under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian approval to use the internet, which will require an in-person visit by the parent/guardian. This will only be needed once since once the parent or guardian agrees it will show on the users record.

It is .25 per page to copy., self service, if you need help go to the desk and ask for help.

You can donate online by clicking the Donate Now button on the upper center of the Windber Library homepage. We send out Fund Drive letters once a year that you can donate with a check. You can also donate by sending a check to the library’s address. If you send in $250 or more via check a tax/thank you letter will be sent to you.  Also in the library, if you choose not to be anonymous, there is a Fund Drive book that will list your name and what year you contributed.

Fax

Ask for a cover page at the desk, $2.00 a page to fax out from the library and .25 a page to have something faxed to the library. We will fax it for you, you need to have the fax number it is being sent to.

Get a Library Card

Free library cards are provided to residents of Somerset county. If you live outside of Somerset county go to your local library and get a card. Then once you have a card at your local library it will have a P.A. Access sticker on it. Bring your local library’s card to any other Pennsylvania library and you will get their library cards for free. If you do not bring a library card from any Pennsylvania library then you will be charged $10.00 a year to use this library.
You must have I.D.(like a driver’s license), you will fill out information for your file and then we give you the library card. Children under 18 must have their parents signature on their application and their parents I.D.
Acceptable forms of I.D.:
*Driver’s license
*Driver’s permit
*Identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles
The identification must have a address, P.O. boxes excluded, and must be your current address. If your identification does not have your current address then additional materials that show your current address must be shown. This includes:
*Current vehicle registration
*Current voter registration card
*Current bank statement, credit card bill, utility bill, residential property tax bill, rent receipt, deed, property insurance bill, or lease agreement
*Secondary school identification
If you do not live in Somerset county then along with your I.D. you will need:
*Local library card with an Access Pennsylvania sticker
For non-resident students you will need one of these:
*Official photo I.D. from high school or institution of higher learning
*Current tuition receipt or financial aid agreement
Cards expire after one year and a email will be sent to you reminding you to renew your card, parents must renew their children’s(under 18) library cards.

Inter Library Loans

If you want a item that we do not carry then you can I.L.L. it. You would bring your library card to the library, know the details of the item you want(title, author,etc.), go to the desk and let them know. They will give you a form to fill out with pertinent details for the item. When the item is in we will call you, we won’t say what the item is, just that your I.L.L. is in. You can have up to three I.L.L. requests and three I.L.L. items out at a time. For example you can have two items out and have one I.L.L. request, or you could have one I.L.L. item and two I.L.L. requests.When you return the I.L.L. item you can put in another I.L.L.request. Books, D.V.D.’s and C.D.’s are all available through I.L.L.

Learn about Local History

Available in the Whalley room is a collection of local history books. They are not available for check out but you can look at them in the room, there is also a computer in the room especially for genealogy purposes. You can also copy the pages you need for your own personal use, but not for any kind of commercial purposes. Also if you need help with searching out your own family history then Book a Librarian. You can make an appointment with a librarian to help you with your search.

Meeting Room

For nonprofits to use this room it is $25.00 and for profits pay $50.00.  This room includes a television, vhs/dvd, speaker, screen, sink, refrigerator, tables and chairs. Any use of the room would have to take place during library hours and groups must clean up after themselves. We have ample parking space.

Memorial Books

If you wish to give money specifically towards books then you can either do this online or by check. To do it online you click on the Donate Now button, and under Additional Information put in any notes you might like to add. You can also donate via Check and send it in with a note.

Pay a fine or fee

Go to the front desk, give them your card or your item. They will tell you how much you owe and you pay it. Late books are 25 cents a day and late D.V.D’s are a $1.00 a day.

Sand in Cover-$3.00

Torn Cover-$3.00

Cracked Spine-$3.00

Torn Pages-$2.00

Books damaged beyond repair are subject to a fee equal to the price of the book + $5.00

Also .25 per page to print. You can print from the computers.

Renew

To renew your items call the library, tell them your name, the name of the books and it will be renewed to you again. Books will be renewed to you for another two weeks and D.V.D’s will be for another week. You can also renew your items on your account. Just click on the Log In page, log in, click on Items Checked Out, and renew them. Inter Library Loan renewals depend on the lending library, to try to renew them call a week ahead of the time you are suppose to return the items, we will renew it for you and let you know if the lending library renewed it or not.

Scan

To have any documents sent to your email address come to the library and we can do it for you. Ask someone at the desk to scan any documents you need. This is a free service, there are no charges.

WiFi

When you come into the library if your device has WiFi on then the page to accept our Terms and Conditions should automatically come up. If not then ask for help at the desk.
