Our Town Article Late December 2022

The Windber Public Library Board of Trustees would like to thank all those who have given and plan to give to the Windber Public Library Fund Drive. We are still just a little shy of 20,000 dollars with a goal of 30,0000 for year ending 2022. Our mission statement is to empower our community through equal access to materials, services, and programs. Donating to a worthy local cause could be the perfect New Year’s resolution to make a difference in the lives of many. We hope you have a New Year filled with lots of books!

I’ve always found interest in this poem below that is synonymous with New Year’s!

In 1788 Robert Burns sent the poem ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to the Scots Musical Museum, indicating that it was an ancient song but that he’d been the first to record it on paper. The phrase ‘auld lang syne’ roughly translates as ‘for old times’ sake’, and the song is all about preserving old friendships and looking back over the events of the year.

It is sung all over the world, evoking a sense of belonging, fellowship, and nostalgia.

It has long been a much-loved Scottish tradition to sing the song just before midnight. Everyone stands in a circle holding hands, then at the beginning of the final verse (‘And there’s a hand my trusty friend’) they cross their arms across their bodies so that their left hand is holding the hand of the person on their right, and their right hand holds that of the person on their left. When the song ends, everyone rushes to the middle, still holding hands, and probably giggling. https://www.scotland.org/features/the-history-and-words-of-auld-lang-syne

New books: Jailing the Johnstown Judge by Bruce Siwy, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 17 by Jeff Kinney, Bliss on Toast by Prue Leith, Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino, The Philosophy of Modern Song by Bob Dylan, Surrender by Bono, Before Your Memory Fades by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Rock and Roll in Kennedy’s America by Richard Aquila, The Funny Stuff by P.J. Our Town Article December 2022

Information on a quaint holiday tradition from across the globe:

Imagine this: It’s Christmas Eve and after receiving a brand-new book from your family, you cozy up in your favorite reading nook or in front of the fire with a mug of hot cocoa and spend the rest of the evening reading.

That’s exactly how Icelandic people celebrate Christmas each year. This tradition is known as Jolabokaflod, which translates roughly to “Christmas book flood” in English.

Jolabokaflod started during World War II, when paper was one of the few things not rationed in Iceland. Because of this, Icelanders gave books as gifts while other commodities were in short supply, turning them into a country of bookaholics to this day, according to jolabokaflod.org. In fact, a 2013 study conducted at Bifröst University found that 50 percent of Icelanders read more than eight books a year and 93 percent read at least one. https://www.countryliving.com/life/a46204/jolabokaflod-iceland-christmas-reading-tradition/

The Director and his Wife have made this a Christmas Eve holiday tradition filled with unique chocolate of choice and books picked specifically for one another in secret. It is the perfect way to get swept up into the unraveling Christmas tidal wave that evening then washed over by the morning and its kaleidoscopic illuminations of friends, family and steadfast traditions.

New Books for December include:

On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton, My Travels with Mrs. Kennedy by Clint Hill, The Maze Cutter by James Dashner, The Zero Night by Brian Freeman, The Prisoner by B.A. Paris, The Cloisters by Katy Hays, Murder at Black Oaks by Philip Margolin, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger, The Stories We Tell by Joanna Gaines, The Fall of Numeor by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Perfect Assassin by James Patterson, The Twist of a Knife by Anthony Horowitz, Hunting Time by Jeffery Deaver, Tom Clancy Red Winter by Marc Cameron, The Last Invitation by Darby Kane, Queens of the Age of Chivalry by Alison Weir, A Private Spy by John Le Carre, Why We Meditate by Daniel Goleman, What the Ear Hears and Doesn’t by Richard Mainwaring, and many others!

Remember, it is never too late to make a holiday contribution to the library. A gift to the library, is a gift to each member of the community with the materials we provide. We specialize in copying, faxing, scanning, books, dvds, audiobooks, children’s books, large print, newsprint, new releases, puzzles, meeting space, and use of computers. All donors with donations of 250 dollars or more will receive tax deductible letters in January. We are just over 18,000 dollars with a goal of 30, 000 dollars. Inflation has hit us hard with our natural gas bill and electricity increases during the pandemic. Any donation can go a long way in securing learning materials and services for our wonderful Windber community. We take great pride in serving the community and it is our privilege to offer new and exciting options in the future. Thank you to all those who support the cause. Help us raise the fund drive thermometer for a red hot start to winter and turn a new page for a thriving future.

We may have limited books on vacuums but feel free to come check out our loanable magazines where you can find all the hottest topics. For instance, we have Consumer Reports which can give you the best prices and reviews on anything imaginable as well as vacuums. Try your hand by posting your shelf to the Library’s Facebook page on that day of the event!

November 2021 Windber Spirit

The Windber Public Library Board of Trustees mourns the passing of Ray DiBattista, a past long time member of the board. Ray was board president during the late 1990s when the former East End School converted into the present library on Graham Avenue. Ray was instrumental in obtaining grants and other funding that made the project possible. We are grateful for his efforts in helping to keep the Windber Public Library a valuable community asset.

In other library news, look for the Library’s Annual Fall Book sale from November 13 to 18. One dollar a bag, come ready to fill!

Ukulele Facts

The ukulele came to life in the 19th century in Hawaii. It is an adaptation of the Portuguese instrument the machete.

The ukulele’s name supposedly translates to “jumping flea” in Hawaiian.

The ukulele most commonly comes in four sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. However, there are other sizes are available including the minuscule pocket ukulele.

There are four strings on a standard ukulele which are tuned to G, C, E, and A.

There are a variety of ukulele hybrid instruments available including the guitalele (a cross between the classical guitar and the ukulele) and the banjolele (a cross between the banjo and the ukulele).
